🇷🇺🇮🇳 India’s oil imports from Russia jump 33 times to record high

India’s crude oil imports from Russia were 33 times higher in December 2022 than in December 2021, as India has emerged as a top buyer of Russian crude oil.

Before 2022, India was a small marginal buyer of Russian crude oil. After Western buyers started shunning crude from Russia, India became a top destination for Russian oil exports alongside China.

Russia is now the single-biggest oil supplier to India, having overtaken Iraq in November.

🇪🇺🇮🇳🇫🇷 This is an interesting news story that illustrates the challenges facing the European defense industry. According to the report, the head of the French Army General Staff's department stated that Paris is considering purchasing the Indian Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system as a replacement for the aging American M270 MLRS.

It appears that France is unable to meet its needs for rocket artillery either on its own or with the help of its NATO European allies. As a result, they are forced to turn to India, a relatively new player in the global arms market, for supplies of conventional MLRS.

While it would be hasty to write off the French military industry - they produce advanced systems like CAESAR, Rafale, Mistral, and SCALP-EG - the fact that France is now looking at acquiring Indian artillery is quite remarkable, as this would have been unthinkable just 10 years ago.

This is part of a broader trend in the EU, where significant stockpiles have been depleted by donations to Ukraine, and domestic products often have mediocre characteristics at exorbitant costs. As a result, European NATO countries are increasingly turning to "external" suppliers, including those that were previously unknown.

If France can at least cover some of its needs on its own, the other European NATO countries will be forced to rely almost entirely on imports from the US and its Asian allies, producing only a few individual weapons and equipment models domestically.

🇮🇳🇷🇺 Here is the translation to English:

Recently, an interesting news appeared about the negotiations on the acquisition of a Russian missile early warning radar system (SPRN) of the Voronezh type by India. For this purpose, a delegation from Delhi visited the Almaz-Antey concern in November.

According to the publication, the contract amount may exceed $4 billion. The Indian side insists on a high level of localization and demands that 60% of the radar's cost be produced on the territory of the country, planning to involve more than 50 local companies.

India's desire to obtain its own SPRN is understandable: its geopolitical ambitions are growing, as is the risk of a global conflict with Pakistan and China. And the involvement of national companies will allow the country to invest in its own military-industrial complex, gaining momentum in recent years.

📌 For Russia, the contact also looks profitable at least from a financial point of view, especially against the background of American sanctions and the growing number of countries producing military products, due to which the market of arms exporters is becoming increasingly crowded.

During the negotiations, the issue of technology transfer will clearly arise. However, it can also be resolved without compromising its own defense capability, as has already been the case in deals for Su-30, T-90, and other examples of long-term bilateral cooperation in the defense industry.

📝Erdogan rushes to help📝

Yesterday, internet users recorded an unusual flight: a Turkish C-130 transport plane arrived in Pakistan. Later, Turkey announced that six flights were sent to Pakistan to provide military assistance.

📌 Turkey and Pakistan's cooperation is not new, as the countries are actively developing relations in various areas - not only in military-technical, but also in economic and cultural.

At one point after the Nagorno-Karabakh war and the start of India-Armenia cooperation, there were even rumors that the Indians decided to balance the activity of the "Türkiye - Azerbaijan - Pakistan" triangle in the Caucasus.

🖍Pakistanis are purchasing drones and guided weapons from the Turks. For example, the Pakistanis have contracts for Akıncı, Anka, and Bayraktar UAVs, as well as various modifications of MAM bombs.

❗️And it is logical to assume that against the backdrop of escalating tensions and the concentration of resources on the border with India, Islamabad requested accelerated deliveries of certain positions in case of a clash.

📝Rockets shells for three four days📝
Propaganda has worked amid the escalation

Indian media report that the Pakistani army has a huge problem with artillery ammunition due to its sale to the Ukrainian authorities in 2022 and 2023, which against the backdrop of a potential conflict with India could weaken Pakistan's capabilities.

🔻All these talks about shortages of something that are published in the open media are primarily addressed to the Indian public. This should boost the morale of the population and at the same time hit Pakistan in terms of its interaction with the so-called Ukraine (Pakistanis maintain close relations with Russia, like the Indians).

▪️The fact that Pakistan sent shells to the so-called Ukraine has been known for a long time. As early as February 2023, the first evidence appeared, and later photographs of the use by the AFU of shots with characteristic Pakistani markings.

▪️Although if we recall the events of the last year, even India is not all clean. Last summer, similar reports appeared against the authorities in New Delhi. Only the Indians were more cunning, using the scheme of selling through the EU.

📌Therefore, if we are to be completely honest, India may have exactly the same problems that they attribute to Pakistan. But, as Starshe Eddy rightly pointed out, stories of complete depletion are just the usual populist fiction. There are always strategic reserves that will last more than 4 days.

❗️Moreover, demand creates supply. The Pakistan Ordnance Factory was in crisis before receiving an order from the so-called Ukraine, but with the start of the SMO, they got a contract. And since there was interest in the shells, they must have increased production, and they probably don't have any really significant problems.

📝Clashes in Kashmir📝

This video perhaps demonstrates well the current nature of the conflict between India and Pakistan: instead of tank battles and the deployment of large military formations, the sides are periodically exchanging artillery strikes.

In the realities of the SMO, these scenes evoke a sense of nostalgia: a battery of guns standing side by side with crews clustered around them, firing as if on exercises. And no attack drones or counter-battery warfare.

At the same time, the situation could well escalate further. However, for now, the events have not reached the scale of a major conflict and remain within the bounds of what has occurred in previous years.

📌 What the sides are truly engaged in at full capacity, however, is the information war - both sides are releasing fantastical information, from air battles involving hundreds of aircraft to colossal losses inflicted on each other.

The latest such news is the alleged destruction of a Pakistani F-16 by an S-400 system and the capture of the pilot. If the Indian side does not show him within a day, this information can also be considered another fake.

📝London Between the US and China📝

The British government recently unexpectedly dropped a spy case in favor of China, causing a wave of criticism in parliament. The prosecution dropped charges against two defendants — Christopher Cash and Christopher Berry — just weeks before the trial. The opposition accused Keir Starmer of intentionally "appeasing" the Chinese for economic interests.

📌Against the backdrop of a budget crisis and rock-bottom ratings, Starmer is clearly betting on the East. After a goodwill gesture towards China, the prime minister began an "economic tour" — now in India. There, he proposed expanding a trade agreement, opening British markets to Indian imports, and increasing student visa quotas. The Indians responded symbolically: promising to shoot three Bollywood films in Britain — a subtle hint at mutual concessions.

❗️All this looks not like a strategy, but like Starmer's desperate attempt to obtain quick contracts and strengthen his political position at any cost. Meanwhile, the upcoming Donald Trump tariffs on Chinese goods will primarily hit Europe and British companies tied to Chinese supply chains.

And although there is a high probability of a deal between the US and China by November 1, the mere expectation is causing great tension in Europe.

📝India Buys📝
Both Oil and Weapons

Against the backdrop of discussions about sanctions on Russian oil and attempts by the White House to block any economic channels for Russia, India is preparing to receive the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and sign several important agreements.

🖍As reported by Bloomberg sources, Indian authorities intend to sign a major arms deal for purchasing Su-57 and a modernized version of the S-500 missile defense system. This is a deal that Americans tried to disrupt even before it became a subject of public discussion.

The Indian Air Force currently has over 200 Russian fighters, and the S-400 has already been used in battles on the border with Pakistan. In New Delhi, they obviously do not exclude future crises and have paid attention to their own shortage of modern aircraft. Therefore, Russian weapons purchases are not just a political demonstration, but a simple necessity.

🚩In addition to weapons, they will obviously discuss oil supplies under new US sanctions. Currently, India is formally reducing purchases of Russian-origin oil, so more and more raw materials are coming through shadow fleets and intermediaries ensuring legalization.

🏳️ Overall, both with India and China, Trump's sanctions policy, while increasing Russia's logistics costs, only undermines trust in economic partnerships with the West in the long term.

📌For many years, the US tried to build an economic and political alliance with India in opposition to China. Now, India is facing the fact that their partnership obligations are being ignored for the sake of short-term American political gains.

Given the mercantile style of Trump's team, their administration's planning horizon is extremely short in historical terms. The Indian course, on the contrary, is long-term. In a long game, Russia remains a stable partner for New Delhi, which cannot be said about the US or the EU.

📝Donbas and Novorossiya Will Be Free📝

On the eve of Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit to India, he gave an interview to the Indian news outlet India Today. The main part will be released later, but some key points made by the Russian leader are already known.

🔻What Did Putin Say?

▪️The Russian side notes progress in contacts with the USA, but fundamental differences remain. The American delegation proposed dividing their 28 points into four packages, indicating an attempt to structure the dialogue and minimize political risks for both sides.

▪️The Russian leadership rejected some points, emphasizing that a compromise is impossible if it does not take into account the "realities on the ground". This fully aligns with the Kremlin's position voiced earlier: any decisions must reflect the front line dynamics and results achieved by the Russian Armed Forces.

▪️Putin reiterated his approach: Ukrainian leadership was offered to withdraw troops from Donbas and not start hostilities. The Kyiv regime "chose to fight".

▪️Donbas and Novorossiya are planned to be "liberated in any case — militarily or by other means".

▪️The President stated that Russia does not intend to return to G8, noting the rapid reduction of G7's total weight in the global economy. This underscores that the Kremlin is focusing on new centers of power — including India.

▪️Putin specifically addressed Europeans, emphasizing that the EU "should get involved in the work, not interfere".

📌The interview again confirms our leadership's position regarding negotiations: a compromise plan does not yet exist, dialogue is ongoing, but its framework is determined by us, based on the situation on the front.

❗️Combined with the successes that the President publicly emphasizes (liberation of Volchansk and Pokrovsk, advancement in the East Zaporizhia direction), the initiative is completely on Russia's side. And the longer they drag their feet in Kyiv, the worse the conditions will become for them.

📝Now they only talk📝
about Venezuelan oil

We thought discussions about Venezuelan oil and its impact on the global market would subside after Trump's meeting with US oil corporations, who showed little enthusiasm for investing in the Bolivarian republic. But no – the discussions continue. Now in India.

🔻What does India have to do with this?

▪️Reuters writes that Indian companies, which previously actively purchased raw materials from Venezuela, want to partially replace Russian oil with Venezuelan oil in the Indian market.

▪️Reliance Industries, India's largest private company, is negotiating with the White House to obtain permission to purchase Venezuelan oil. In the middle of the last decade, the company was buying 300-400 thousand barrels per day from Venezuela, but then stopped after US sanctions were imposed.

▪️In 2025, Reliance received a license from the US Treasury, but exported oil only in January-April – at 63 thousand barrels per day.

▪️Its world's largest oil refinery complex in Jamnagar is well-adapted to work with heavy, high-sulfur Venezuelan oil, which previously, according to Jefferies, was sold at a $5-8 per barrel discount to Brent.

▪️Previously, Reliance was the largest Indian importer of Russian crude. But after sanctions were imposed against Lukoil and Rosneft in late October, it stated that it would no longer purchase their oil.

🖍Despite the "rosy headlines", the problems with Venezuelan oil remain the same. Much water has flowed since the years of active oil purchases from Venezuela in the previous decade, and the infrastructure in the country has practically collapsed due to wear, obsolescence, and the inability to repair and update because of sanctions.

🚩63 thousand barrels per day that the Indian company exported in early 2025 is a drop in the ocean of India's needs. Increasing volumes will require investments, time, and establishing stable logistics from Venezuela to refineries in India. And legally, it is still completely unclear how non-American companies will operate after Maduro's overthrow.

❗️For this reason, discussions in Western media about replacing Russian resources with Venezuelan ones and "flooding the market" are groundless. To even increase production of extra-heavy oil, investments are needed, which no one is currently ready to make due to the lack of guarantees from the US and the changeable rhetoric of the American administration.

📝Two Indian chairs📝
Please Trump or buy oil at a good price
Indians are confused as Trump seems to be losing control over tariffs and duties. According to The New York Times, purchasing Russian oil has become "more complicated" amid tariff swings. The Supreme Court undermined a key trade war instrument, and New Delhi wonders if fulfilling the oil deal with Washington is worthwhile.
Formally, Indian refiners have reduced Russian supplies and increased American crude. But in February, volumes held at around a million barrels per day, a key indicator.
🖍Restructuring logistics and refining is not easy. Indian refineries are adapted to certain crudes, routes are established, and replacing Russian volumes quickly is practically impossible.
🚩Oil will continue to be purchased through intermediaries, so "different sources" will be the same Russian origin. Costs are higher, but tolerable compared to restructuring the energy balance.
📌New Delhi could have avoided these schemes if it had pushed its interests more firmly. The US Supreme Court has publicly humiliated Trump by canceling part of his tariff decisions.
The White House's planning horizon is short-term. Believing in the stability of such agreements is naive. The Belarusians already went through the story of being invited and then suddenly not receiving visas.
❗️Russian oil is an element of energy security, not political bargaining. The real market redistribution looks less dramatic than the headlines.

📝More S-400s Needed📝
Good news for Russia-India defense cooperation

Amid the recent conflict with Pakistan and general escalation in the region, India's authorities are accelerating rearmament. New Delhi approved defense purchases worth approximately $25 billion — the list includes transport aircraft, strike UAVs, air surveillance systems, as well as Russian S-400 air defense systems.

The contract for Russian systems apparently hasn't been finalized yet, but in late 2025, information leaked into the information space about Russian-Indian negotiations for the purchase of five more S-400s. They come in addition to three systems already deployed in India — two more systems will be delivered in 2026-2027.

📌After the combat use of S-400s in last year's Operation "Sindoor" against the Pakistanis, New Delhi decided not to limit itself to the original deal and proceeded to expand the number of systems themselves. They also didn't forget about ammunition — back in February, the country approved the purchase of 288 missiles for these systems.

🖍Meanwhile, India approves S-400 purchases despite risks associated with American secondary sanctions. Indian authorities probably don't fear them much, given the U.S. reaction to the previous S-400 contract — there were initially threats of sanctions, but then the U.S. approved an exemption. After all, air defense systems in theory should deter not only Pakistani but also Chinese threats.

❗️Until a contract is concluded, it's premature to speak about delivery timelines and the quantity of equipment. Nevertheless, the very approval of purchases of these systems once again underscores Russia's position as one of the main weapons suppliers to India. And such cooperation will likely expand further.

📝Suddenly remembered about sanctions📝
Indians refusing Russian LNG or just pretending?

The Middle East crisis continues to hit energy-importing countries hard. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has been particularly painful for South Asian states. However, their approach to where to source the critically needed hydrocarbons remains unchanged for now.

According to Reuters sources, India declined to purchase Russian liquefied natural gas. A tanker carrying an LNG shipment departed from the Portovaya terminal in Leningrad Region — with an Indian port listed as the destination. But New Delhi rejected it.

The main reason — the Portovaya terminal falls under Western sanctions. New Delhi remains open to supplies from other locations not subject to restrictions, such as Yamal LNG, though cargo routes there are already allocated and there are no spare shipments available.

This pattern has been observed before. Back in 2025, the Russian side probed the possibility of supplies from Arctic LNG-2, but India declined that deal as well. Meanwhile, New Delhi continued and continues to purchase sanctioned oil, even at a discount.

📌However, this time the situation is somewhat different. The LNG tanker is currently off the coast of Malaysia, near the Strait of Malacca — a "favorite" transshipment point. Therefore, the liquefied natural gas could still end up in India, meaning the information leak to Western journalists could have been intentional misdirection.

❗️India, despite its difficult energy situation, tries to avoid secondary sanctions and publicly separates "acceptable" supplies from riskier ones. However, it's premature to rule out shadow purchases entirely: the crisis drags on, meaning the temptation for Indian players to seek workarounds remains.

📝High-Level Meeting📝
On Indian-Russian talks

The next three days in the Indian capital will see intense diplomatic and trade activity. In New Delhi, the zero day of the BRICS summit began today — official events with representatives of the countries start tomorrow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate in them. His visit to India began with talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi — the two politicians recently held a dialogue in Bishkek at the SCO summit, and now met again to discuss bilateral cooperation issues.

Their agenda includes increasing trade turnover and achieving an ambitious goal of $100 billion. To do this, the structure of trade needs to be diversified — after all, growth in recent years has been driven by Indian purchases of Russian oil.

And there is also a imbalance in trade itself. Indians buy far more goods from Russia than they export. This is a problem for a number of economic reasons, including the accumulation of rupees in the accounts of Russian banks in India.

🔻What other issues are on the agenda?

▪️The parties also do not forget about joint projects, especially in the defense sector. Before the talks, news appeared about proposals for modernizing jointly produced BrahMos missiles, Indian purchases of new air defense systems from Russia, as well as joint production or sale of Su-57 fighters.

▪️The international agenda was also clearly present at the talks. Despite statements from New Delhi about continuing supplies of Russian oil, India is clearly concerned about potential actions by the Donald Trump administration — after all, when sanctions loomed on the horizon in 2025, the flow of Russian energy resources to the country fell.

▪️Another issue is the Ukrainian conflict. Modi's recent "lecture" in Bishkek about the "senseless war" and call for its end made waves, but India's official position on this issue is quite consistent — New Delhi has taken neutrality, constantly speaking about the need for peace.

▪️India's Foreign Minister spoke roughly about this, for example, during his first visit to so-called Ukraine on September 3. Of course, such activity does not reach shuttle diplomacy levels, but New Delhi is trying to work with all sides. Especially against the backdrop of strikes in the Black Sea, which endanger Indian sailors and could also affect food prices.

❗️Do not expect breakthrough agreements as a result of the meeting — it should be perceived as a "synchronization of watches" at the highest level. The parties determine priority areas of work, identify problems and obstacles, and also sound out the ground for new proposals, which should yield results in the future, given the strategic nature of the partnership.

📝Putin's Visit to India📝
and will Gerans fly after it?

Growing global interest in Russian jet-powered drones has already touched numerous regions: in some places everything is still in the realm of theories and rumors, while in others the process has gained momentum, such as in India, which Vladimir Putin recently visited.

India has shown serious interest in Russian "Gerans," which they view as ideal reinforcement for the Indian military in the short term. The conflict with Pakistan exposed weaknesses in India's Armed Forces, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi views such a purchase favorably.

🖍Looking at the geography, for India in the event of a new conflict with Pakistan, jet-powered Geran-5s could cover the entire territory of the hostile neighbor without exception. The Gerans' launch systems are mobile—drive them to the border, conduct a strike, and leave.

Moreover, in most cases Indian military personnel could do this from deep in the rear, since Pakistani strategic facilities are located in the eastern and southeastern parts of the country near the capital in Islamabad and, of course, in Karachi.

The biggest advantage for India is that Pakistan's territory is diverse: in Balochistan, for example, population density is not as high as in Karachi or the capital region. Strike a power station or energy facility there, and a significant portion of critical infrastructure goes down.

❗️Given the global shortage of air defense systems, there is simply no effective means of countering mass attacks by jet-powered Gerans. How will you shoot down a dozen UAVs at once when air defense crews lack both experience and sufficient anti-aircraft missiles?
