Twitter explodes as Bayern draw Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals
After the most entertaining quarter-finals stage in recent years saw the likes of Barcelona, Manchester City and Juventus bow out, only 4 teams remain in this season’s UEFA Champions League.Usual suspects and two-time defending champions Real Madrid find themselves in the company of Bayern Munich, and unusual suspects Liverpool and AS Roma. The semi-finals draw was a highly anticipated one, and it sure didn’t disappoint. German giants Bayern Munich were the first to be picked out of the pool, as they were eventually paired against Real Madrid, in what clearly is the tie to keep your eyes on.Subsequently, Liverpool were drawn against AS Roma in what promises to be another cracker of a fixture.Naturally, fans took to Twitter to express their feelings after the draw, and here are some of the best tweets we found:#Liverpool grab Roma in the semifinals #UCL draw…They’ve got to be happy with that!!I hope Roma has an armoured bus to get them into Anfield 😂😂— Harry Phipps-Clark (@PhippsClark) April 13, 2018Semifinales listas! #CHAMPIONSxESPN #Bayern – #RealMadrid #Liverpool – #Roma #ucldraw #UCL #ChampionsLeagueDraw pic.twitter.com/WuMdnANa1X— LaloSoloYo ⚽ 🎥 (@Futboniero) April 13, 2018They want a #RealMadrid vs #Liverpool final! Fast forward 20 minutes, and the stage was set. Bayern drew Liverpool. The prospect of facing Liverpool so early in the UCL seems to spell only gloom and doom, and it is also perhaps unfair, considering that both Liverpool and Bayern are teams that should easily make it at least to the quarterfinals, if not the semis. Both boast enviable squads with a stockpile of talent. All is not bad, however, and there are a number of reasons why this draw might still be good for Bayern Munich.Niko Kovac put to the test earlyIt is no secret that the Bayern manager has faced harsh criticism from a large section of the Bayern Munich fanbase at various points this season. Some have pointed out his lack of big game experience, his lack of a ‘proper game plan’; others have criticised his choice of substitutions (or a lack of substitutions at the right time) and team management skills. In Klopp, Kovac has been pitted against one of the very best managers, a coach who has ample experience coaching elite sides, most famously his feared Dortmund side who gegenpress’d the hell out of their opponents. If there is any better time for Kovac to make a statement, it is now. If he manages to grind out the wins (they need not be pleasant), he will more or less gain the complete support and trust of the fanbase and the management early on, which might be crucial to his confidence later in the season. The squad’s objective is brought into focus One of Bayern’s major problems the last few seasons in the Champions league has been a sense of complacency that has plagued them later in the competition. Facing relatively weaker opposition in the round of 16 the last few seasons (Arsenal in the ‘16-17 season and Besiktas in the ‘17-18 season) gave the team a false sense of confidence early on, papering over a host of problems that were left unfixed. Bayern went on to suffer defeats in the later stages, and quite painfully so, at the hands of our most hated foe, Real Madrid. Facing a squad of Liverpool’s calibre this early in the competition could give the players and the coach a renewed sense of motivation and a fighting spirit from the get-go, since they’ll have to wrestle their way past a relentless Liverpool side to advance. Beating them would bring the squad together and give us the motivation to go all the way.The Van Dijk factorLiverpool’s towering centre-back, Virgil Van Dijk will miss the first leg of the tie due to a yellow-card suspension, and he will be dearly missed by the Liverpool faithful. Standing tall at 6”4, his menacing presence in the Liverpool backline is one of the main reasons why they’ve been racking up points all season. Report: Liverpool to bid €15 million for Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara
FC Bayern Muenchen - Training Session Photo by M. Donato/FC Bayern via Getty ImagesLiverpool is reportedly ready to make a low-ball €15 million bid for Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara.Per a report from Italian journalist Nicolo Shira, Liverpool is preparing a formal bid for Bayern Munich’s midfielder Thiago Alcantara. The sum of that proposal, however, is going to leave Bayern fans — and the club’s board — likely wanting more.Much more. For the cool price of €15 million, Liverpool would like to acquire one of the slickest and most adept midfielders in the world.Yup ... €15 million.Next week talks between #Liverpool and #BayernMunich for #ThiagoAlcantara will officially start. #Reds don’t want to pay €30-35M asking price by Bayern, because Thiago’s contract expires next June. They are preparing a bid of €15M. #LFC agreed personal terms for 4-year contract https://t.co/zElj1ATs8K— Nicolò Schira (@NicoSchira) August 21, 2020While the sum is not quite like shopping off the clearance rack at Dick’s Sporting Goods, €15 million for a player of Thiago’s skill-set and ability is well ... underwhelming. Assuredly, this is just the first step in the two clubs’ lobbing financial bids at each other, but Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp will likely find that offer swatted back at him, while Karl-Heinz Rummenigge provides a Dikembe Mutombo-esque finger wag to show his disdain for such a low-ball offer. As always, stay tuned. There will surely be MUCH MORE to this story once this weekend is over.Read more...

FC Augsburg v FC Bayern München - BundesligaPhoto by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty ImagesJulian Nagelsmann shuffles the deck in an apparent bid to bring the best out of the star Senegalese forward. Are things alright for Sadio Mané at Bayern Munich? The dynamic do-everything forward arrived from Liverpool this summer in a rich vein of form, but has endured a drought in goal production since then. The bosses in charge appear to be trying everything they can to get him firing again, deploying him in two straight games — against FC Barcelona in the Champions League and FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga — on the left wing.Reportedly, that move could be permanent, which would have significant ramifications for Bayern's attacking structure. From kicker's Georg Holzner:Sadio #Mane is now seen more as a winger at @fcbayern. Just like at the best of times in #Liverpool. Those in charge give him time.A remarkable scene: During the half-time break in Augsburg, Manuel #Neuer hugged Mané and talked to him.Mané hasn't exactly played poorly through this drought — the latter parts of which he hasn't had striker partner Serge Gnabry alongside him — but nonetheless the move may help unlock something else in his game.It might also create a crowded situation at wing, where Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané still play and may have to vie for time — on the right side of the formation. Meanwhile, the move could shift Thomas Müller and Jamal Musiala not only inside, but into the tip of the attacking line, where they were employed against Barça.It may also afford greater opportunities to Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting as the team's lone box striker option up top, as well as open up chances for the fearless youngster Mathys Tel — who has also been deployed largely on the wings to date, but has never been shy to shoot.Encouraging signs, or worrying? Is Julian Nagelsmann tinkering too much again? Does this cast Bayern's big transfer window in a different light? Sound off in the comments below.

(Tz)Bayern Munich is reportedly taking a close look at Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Manu Koné: The summer transfer phase was extremely chaotic at FC Bayern. First the endless back and forth about dream player Harry Kane, then the mess on deadline day surrounding the failed transfer of João Palhinha. The record champions had to struggle with failures and a thin squad for the entire first half of the season. In winter you want to add more to the transfer market. In addition to a player who can play both the position of central defender and right-back, a defensive midfielder is on Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel’s wish list. As the French portal Sports Zone reports, Manu Koné from Borussia Mönchengladbach is said to be a candidate for FC Bayern.Koné is no stranger to FC Bayern’s list. Already in October, Bild reported on the Munich-based company’s potential interest. “There is contact with management. “You watch him, you look at the extent to which a transfer would be possible,” said Bild reporter Christian Falk.According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Liverpool FC, Tottenham Hotspur, and Paris Saint-Germain are also in the mix for Koné: #PSG added Manu #Kone to their list of midfielders.

Only the details of his salary remain to be worked out: ✅ As exclusively reported yesterday, Kingsley Coman (28) is ready to move to Saudi Arabia. The interested club is: Al-Hilal. Bayern want to sell Coman. One crucial question being discussed is the amount of the salary @BILD_Sport— Christian Falk (@cfbayern) August 27, 2024According to a report from France Football journalist Nabil Djellit, Liverpool FC might consider taking a run at Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman: Info: #Liverpool is interested in Kingsley #Coman to strengthen his offensive sector. #Mercato #BayernHowever, Coman’s resolve might be tested. The Saudis are coming back in a big way with a lucrative offer that could tempt Coman per L’Equipe (as captured by @iMiaSanMia): The Saudi club that made a lucrative offer for Kingsley Coman is Al Hilal. The player has not made a final decision yet about his future destination, even though he always wanted to play in the Premier League one day.Bayern have contacted several big European clubs to ‘test the waters’ and explore Kingsley Coman’s market, which wasn’t appreciated by the player. Coman initially didn’t have the intention of leaving Munich following the birth of his son. But that has changed a few days ago - Coman told people close to him that he made the decision to leave Bayern, even though he felt very comfortable in the Bavarian entourage.L’Equipe’s Loïc Tanzi confirmed that Bayern Munich and Al Hilal are in full agreement on a deal, but Coman has not made a final decision (via @iMiaSanMia). Bayern and Al Hilal have reached an agreement in principle for the transfer of Kingsley Coman. The player has not agreed to the move yet. Premier League offers could soon arrive.Abendzeitung journalists Maximilian Koch and Kilian Kreitmair captured a statement from Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen on Coman’s status. “You can imagine that I will not comment on current rumours in the last days of the transfer window. That is not appropriate towards the players and it introduces unnecessary speculation,” Dreesen said. Fabrizio Romano checked in with his version of how things are unfolding: Al Hilal have submitted an important, huge bid to sign Kingsley Coman.
There’s competition from Premier League top clubs as well as Barça as Hansi Flick is an admirer.

Germany Press Conference and Training Session - UEFA European Under-21 Championship 2025 Final Photo by Boris Streubel - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images Nick Woltemade is the next big target for Bayern Munich... Woltemade pursuit has Bayern puzzled for now (FCB Inside via @iMiaSanMia)Bayern Munich still wants Nick Woltemade...and VfB Stuttgart still does not want to give him up. For Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, the situation has been an odd one. “We have a situation that has been talked about often enough. We made an offer. That hasn’t led to any discussions to date – and that’s the status quo. I’ve said elsewhere that I don’t like to talk about players of other clubs, and Nick Woltemade is currently a player of VfB Stuttgart. We’ll see how things develop,” Dreesen told FCB Inside (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Our industry is so crazy that everything is normal and sometimes abnormal.”When asked if the club would up its offer, Dreesen passed the buck (figuratively, not literally): “I must explicitly say that this is certainly also the task of my esteemed colleague Max Eberl, together with Christoph Freund.”Bayern Munich will likely take another run at this, though it will not be easy.
