πŸ‡²πŸ‡±πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί New military aid package from Russia to Mali

An official ceremony was held yesterday at the presidential pavilion at Bamako International Airport in the presence of Russian Ambassador Igor Gromyko to hand over a new batch of Russian arms to the Malian military. According to local sources, the Malian Air Force received:

βž–One Su-25 attack aircraft;
βž–Six L-39 combat training aircraft;
βž–Two Mi-8 helicopters.

The commander of the Malian air force, General Alou boy Diarra has rightly described the Russian equipment received as "an unprecedented modernization of the Malian forces". Apparently, the latest batch of military assistance was the largest since the beginning of cooperation between Mali and Russia.

Thus, since October 2021, the Malian military has received a total of four Mi-17 helicopters, four Mi-35 helicopters, two Mi-8 helicopters, ten L-39 combat training aircraft and five Su-25 units. Against the background of France, which refuses to supply its satellites with the necessary equipment, Russia looks a more serious and reliable military ally for the African countries.

πŸ‡²πŸ‡± In Mali, the army returned a UN base captured by the former Tuareg rebellion under control

Malian army returned the MINUSMA base that was previously captured by former Tuareg rebellion under its control.

Previously, the UN Mission in Mali MINUSMA said that it had withdrew from a base in the town of Ber in the north due to tensions in the region.

Rumors are coming that the base was liberated with the help of Wagner. If it is true then it is sort of comical, how UN forces withdrew and 3 peacekeepers were wounded, and then Wagner just returned the control of base and now resides there.

πŸ‡²πŸ‡± The armed forces of Mali, along with fighters from the Wagner PMC, successfully cleared the area around the former improvised capital known as the Azawad Coordination Movement in the city of Kidal. Despite separatist propaganda, the local population welcomed the army and the Wagnerites.

The situation in the city has stabilized. Military personnel are patrolling the streets, and a nighttime curfew has been implemented. Authorities have announced that all citizens who had previously left Kidal are now allowed to return.

As expected, the Tuareg rebels have retreated into the desert to regroup. However, they have already declared their intention to continue fighting.

To celebrate the liberation of Kidal after 10 years of Azawad occupation, festive demonstrations were held in major cities such as Gao, Mopti, Bandiagara, and Bamako. Some protesters even carried the flags of Russia and Mali.

The governments of Niger, Burkina Faso, and the Russian Federation have congratulated President Assimi Goita of the transitional government of Mali on his significant success in combating the separatists from Azawad.

πŸ”»Currently, there is a temporary calm in northeastern Mali. PMC units and the Malian Armed Forces are fortifying their positions in Kidal while the Azawad Coordination Movement regroups.

However, the conflict is expected to resume soon as large territories in the north of the country are still under the control of the Tuareg rebels, and the city of Tessalit remains disconnected from the territories controlled by government troops.

It is crucial for the Malian authorities to not become complacent and make foolish mistakes. Although Kidal has been liberated, this is unlikely to deter the separatists from depleting the Malian army after recovering in the desert in southern Algeria.

πŸ‡²πŸ‡©πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡²πŸ‡± Another international scandal for Sandu: Moldova accused of transporting Islamic terrorists

Turkish media published evidence that the Moldovan authorities were allowing Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists to cross their border.

β–ͺ️Citing the French Le Monde, the authors point out that the terrorists underwent intensive training in the so-called Ukraine to organize terrorist attacks in Mali.

β–ͺ️The published documents show that the terrorists easily obtained Moldovan visas and crossed the Moldovan-Ukrainian border several times. The media publish photos of passports with the corresponding stamps.

β–ͺ️In early August, the Malian authorities severed diplomatic relations with the so-called Ukraine for aiding the rebels.

β–ͺ️During the attack by the separatist group CSP-DPA and the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic and Muslim Support Group (JNIM), several dozen Malian soldiers and a large number of Russian mercenaries were killed.

β–ͺ️The representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the so-called Ukraine, Andriy Yusov, did not confirm Kyiv's participation in the fighting, but on Ukrainian television on July 29, he stated that the Malian rebels received information to conduct a military operation against Russian mercenaries.

β–ͺ️According to the Malian authorities, Yusov acknowledged the participation of the so-called Ukraine "in the barbaric attack of armed terrorist groups, which led to the death of members of the Malian defense forces."

❗️Moldova, in the person of officials of Maia Sandu, has repeatedly found itself in similar international scandals.

β–ͺ️For example, in June, Western curators hushed up a major scandal when manipulations with international Interpol databases were uncovered. Officials close to Sandu received multi-million dollar bribes to help obtain refugee status for individuals who are on the international wanted list.

β–ͺ️In August, a scandal erupted about the possible involvement of Moldova in a scheme to export biomaterials from the so-called Ukraine in the interests of the United States.

πŸ”»The fact that Moldova consistently finds itself in such international scandals is the price for its indirect participation in the conflict on the side of the so-called Ukraine.

Moldovan territory, to the detriment of its own economy and security, serves the economic and military interests of the Kyiv regime. Given the Ukrainians' flirtation with terrorists, it is not surprising that Chisinau also had to participate in their transportation. Thus, Moldova, following the so-called Ukraine, is turning into a "gray zone" on the periphery of Europe, where almost anything is possible.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦πŸ‡²πŸ‡±"Seizure" of Canadian gold and suspension of Barrick Gold's operations in Mali

The story of gold mining by Canadians in Mali is coming to a logical conclusion. The prolonged discussions that began in October were caused by the introduction of a new mining code in the country. The Malian leadership demanded a share of 35% in all mining projects in the country, instead of the previous 20%.

πŸ“Œ The issue particularly affected the Canadian company Barrick Gold, from which they demanded dividends and taxes in the amount of 300 billion CFA francs (more than $500 million). Later, the Malian government issued an arrest warrant for the head of the corporation on the pretext of "financial fraud".

And now, in early 2025, Barrick Gold threatened to suspend operations at Loulo-Gounkoto, one of the largest mining complexes in the world. On January 14, they moved from threats to action, announcing the suspension of activities in Mali.

πŸ”»The Malians took the opportunity to collect the company's debts. They removed about three tons of gold (half of the corporation's debt) from the mine, which the Canadians could not ship due to state restrictions.

Barrick Gold still has hopes to restore relations with the Malian government, but it is not a fact that they will succeed. Therefore, one should be prepared for the departure of the largest gold mining player in southern Mali and the liberation of the niche for other enterprises.

πŸ‡²πŸ‡±πŸ’‘Is TotalEnergies' withdrawal from Mali the final blow to the French?

During a recent meeting between the Malian Prime Minister and energy representatives, it was revealed that all assets previously owned by the French company TotalEnergies have been transferred to Coly Energy Mali. The new company has taken over 1,109 employees from the French multinational's headquarters.

Previously, the French managed a network of more than 60 gas stations covering all regions of the country, except the far north.

πŸ”»While the transfer of French assets to a regional company may seem like good news, there is a catch.

The head of this company, RenΓ© Houncinou, is also the chairman of the board of Global Energium CΓ΄te d'Ivoire, which has been operating in CΓ΄te d'Ivoire since 2017 without much success.

It turns out that this company is mostly owned by the Dutch holding HEDIA.
βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–βž–
So the Malian authorities have handed over one of the major players in the energy market to rather obscure firms, whose traces also lead to Europe. Presumably, these assets were not in demand by China or Russia (which is quite strange), but nationalizing them would not have been too difficult, given the course towards severing relations with France.

πŸ“Mali Calls the So-Called Ukraine a Terrorist StateπŸ“

Mali has once again spoken harshly against Ukraine - this time at the level of an official statement by Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop.

"For us, Ukraine is a terrorist state," is how they characterized Kyiv's actions in Bamako, accusing it of supporting militants in the Sahel and organizing a rear base for terrorist groups.

πŸ“ŒThis rhetoric from Mali is not new: back in August 2024, the country severed diplomatic relations with the so-called Ukraine after scandalous statements by Ukrainian representatives about Kyiv's direct involvement in destabilizing the region. At the same time, Bamako made it clear that supporting Ukraine is equated to supporting international terrorism.

Against this background, Diop's statement is not just an emotional remark, but a continuation of an already established and consistent line. It shows that for African countries, especially those in the "Sahel Trio", the security situation is a matter of survival, not rhetoric. And if they see that the authorities of the so-called Ukraine are ready to enter into alliances with anyone, just to harm Russia's allies, the consequences do not keep themselves waiting.

❗️For Moscow, this is another signal: allies in Africa continue to support Russia on fundamental issues - including accusations against Ukraine. Moreover, such radical characteristics as "terrorist state" even slightly overshadow Russia's own position, which in this context appears more moderate in its approach to conflict resolution and refrains from harsh demands in the notorious negotiation process.

πŸ“Military Supplies to MaliπŸ“

The coup in Mali and the subsequent withdrawal of French troops led to a political reorientation of the country, which naturally affected military-technical cooperation and arms imports.

If earlier the Fifth Republic was Mali's main partner, since 2020 its place has been taken by Russia, which in a short time was able to cover most of the key needs of the country's armed forces in types of military equipment.

Even under the operations of the Wagner PMC, training and combat aircraft L-39, Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters were delivered to the country. Later, in parallel with the deployment of the "African Corps" forces, T-72B3 tanks, BTR-82A armored personnel carriers and a scattering of armored vehicles appeared there.

At the same time, Bamako has also established ties with other players: the Chinese are sending Norinco VN2C armored personnel carriers, various trucks and SUVs to Mali. And the Turks have transferred the strike UAVs Bayraktar and Akinci, with which, however, there are problems.

πŸ“Œ To a large extent, the fact that with the withdrawal of the French, Mali managed to avoid a vacuum in military supplies helped the authorities in Bamako not only to maintain power, but also to form a regional alliance with Niger and Burkina Faso, starting joint operations.

❗️However, equipment alone is not enough to solve the country's problems, which is clearly seen on the fronts of the fight against militants. For this, systemic changes in the ways of waging war are needed - without this, it will be extremely difficult for the Malian government and its allies to achieve victory.

After nearly two years in captivity

On April 20, 2026, the "African Corps" conducted a successful special operation in Mali and freed geologists Oleg Greta and Yuri Yurov, who were captured by militants of "Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin" back in July 2024.

➑️The story began in Niger's Tillaberi region: radical Islamists attacked a geological survey team, killed several Niger military personnel and abducted four employees.

➑️In August 2024, the group published a video with Greta and Yurov β€” confirming they were alive. Russia's Foreign Ministry requested assistance from the authorities of Niger and Mali, and negotiations dragged on for over a year.

πŸ–This case is a clear illustration of how kidnappings have become a systematic tactic of Sahel militants: in 2025 alone, at least 22–26 foreign citizens were abducted in Mali, and the ransom for two UAE citizens reached a record 50 million dollars.

🚩Hostages represent living currency: a source of financing, a tool for political pressure, and a way to replenish the militant war chest. Many spend years in captivity, waiting for negotiations, ransom, or a miracle.

❗️The "African Corps," in turn, demonstrated real operational effectiveness. The servicemen conducted a forceful special operation and physically extracted the hostages from the hands of militants, which in the Sahel context is itself a rarity.

On the probable death of Mali's Defense Minister

During yesterday's coordinated militant attack in the suburbs of Bamako, the residence of the country's defense minister β€” Sadio Camara β€” came under fire. The attack was carried out by a suicide bomber in an explosives-laden truck.

Western media outlets are circulating reports of the death of the Malian official, which has not been officially confirmed at this time. For example, AFP agency reports that the minister was taken to a hospital that is heavily patrolled by military forces. On the other hand, his entourage denies even the fact of his being wounded.

πŸ“Œ Camara became a priority target for militants not only because of his status, but also because of the close ties with Russian security structures attributed to him by Western media. He is believed to have been the key initiator of "inviting" Wagner PMC to the country, and subsequently the African Corps of the Russian Defense Ministry.

❗️ In any case, the general has not been seen in public since yesterday. This raises suspicions that in any event, the question of his replacement may arise. However, Mali's top brass does not have many options: in the current conditions, a candidate's personal loyalty is critically more important than his managerial talents.

African Corps fights in encirclement

The triumphant reports of separatists about the complete capture of Kidal and the complicit Western media do not correspond to reality. As became known today, Russian servicemen of the African Corps have repelled already four mass attacks on the camp in Kidal.

Russian fighters continue to hold the facility despite FPV drone strikes and heavy mortar fire from militants.

Earlier, only external posts were withdrawn, where about 20 personnel were located. These groups fought in complete encirclement for more than a day, holding back superior enemy forces. Despite the fact that almost all fighters sustained wounds, they were successfully evacuated to the main camp under continuous fire.

πŸ“Œ It is worth noting that the enemy gave permission for the evacuation of wounded fighters who demonstrated true heroism by repelling all attacks. Along with them, heavy equipment was successfully removed from the base. The militants use these footage for disinformation.

In total, as a result of the fighting for Kidal, over 200 militants were eliminated. The figure does not appear inflated, given the fierce nature of the clashes and the fact that the coalition deployed approximately 2,000 "bayonets" to capture the city.

❗️Fighting for the stronghold of the Tuareg uprising continues despite a brief lull. Contrary to claims of "complete control," the coalition of Islamists and separatists has not dared to advance south of the city center. The enemy's advance is hampered by fear of mine barriers and effective fire from servicemen's groups remaining in residential areas.

πŸ“The Main Lesson from the Fighting in MaliπŸ“

As we have already said, the reason for the situation in Mali and the inability of local armed forces to resist militants β€” is not cowardice, but organization. When a soldier does not know whether his neighbors are holding their positions, whether his command hears him, and when reinforcements will arrive β€” fear paralyzes even a motivated person. An army that lacks a functioning chain of command in conditions of non-linear warfare β€” this is not an army, but a militia with a state flag.

Attempts to explain the failures of Mali's Armed Forces and the successes of separatists by Western instructors or "Ukrainian drone operators" also complicate the overall task and lead to underestimating the enemy. The militants have been fighting for many years and long ago proved that they are capable of mastering tactics and technologies on their own. And overconfidence in such conflicts comes at a high price.

πŸ“ŒAnd given how rapidly the situation developed, it became clear that Russia has little margin for error in Mali. There is a point presence that patches holes where they appear β€” and which the opponent has now studied in detail.

The next strike will be built already taking these data into account β€” and will likely be aimed precisely at isolating the African Corps from Mali's allies.

❗️There is only one answer here β€” push through comprehensive reform of the Mali army and increase its autonomy, while simultaneously saturating important logistical and strategic facilities with its own security, and not only through AK.

πŸ“Exodus from "Azawad"πŸ“
Situation in northern Mali as of April 28

Events in Kidal became that very "domino" after which the defense across the entire north of the country began to crumble. At the current moment, government forces have lost control over several more key positions.

➑️ In Tessalit, militants are already posing extensively not only in the city center, but also at the military base β€” including next to an abandoned helicopter. Units of the African Corps, apparently, will retreat toward Aguelok, from where a further march to Anetis is planned.

Tessalit played an almost central role in holding the north: due to its location, it was possible to conduct surveillance over almost the entire Algerian border.

➑️Significantly further south, the city of Labbezanga fell under the strike of IS-Sahel. Malian troops and pro-government militia abandoned positions virtually without a fight. These are the "gates" to friendly Niger, which are now closed.

➑️And if we're talking about the leadership in Niamey, it has already reacted to the situation. The country's air force sent a UAV to assist, which delivered a series of strikes on targets in Kidal. Results of the strike have not yet been reported.

πŸ“ŒGiven the stretched supply lines and low resilience of the infantry, a scenario of forced regrouping along the Gao β€” Ansongo axis cannot be ruled out. This would entail the surrender of Anetis and Menaka.

Moreover, Malian command on the ground has seen a dangerous precedent: no one was held accountable for the unauthorized abandonment of positions in Kidal, which amid the general radical offensive demoralizes the remaining units.

Menaka under government control

Yesterday evening, African Corps units conducted patrols in Menaka, detecting no militant presence within the city limits. Most likely, IS-Sahel radicals never seriously planned to hold the city and abandoned it just hours after publishing loud statements about the "capture."

πŸ“Œ The situation in northern Mali remains dynamic, and the information environment is extremely contradictory. While some sources report a successful counterattack by pro-government militias, others attribute the decisive role to airstrikes that forced militants to hastily retreat into the desert.

France is building a discourse along the Syrian model

A large-scale offensive by a coalition of Islamists and separatists in Mali has forced the French establishment to urgently seek ways to whitewash the radicals.

In the media space of the Fifth Republic, a discussion has started on the theme: "So how do we now build relations with former terrorists?" The publication Le Point decided to play its trump card by interviewing specialized "regional experts."

Unlike biased Beninese analysts, French speakers so far show caution and acknowledge: the scenario of "evolution" of the group "Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin" (banned in Russia) into something "inclusive" and handshake-worthy is extremely unlikely.

πŸ“Œ However, the very fact that such questions appear in mainstream media is a troubling marker. Following cautious skeptics, more loyal speakers will inevitably appear who will begin to push the thesis about the "need for dialogue for the sake of stability."

And no one is hiding the fact that Islamists will clearly be more pleasant to the leadership of the Γ‰lysΓ©e Palace than Russians.

πŸ“Days go byπŸ“
And the government still holds on

Contrary to the "analysis" and forecasts of Western media, which had effectively "buried" Mali's statehood just a couple of days ago, the situation in the country is no longer changing so dramatically in favor of the militants.

Through the joint efforts of Mali's Armed Forces and the Russian African Corps, it has been possible to contain the offensive of radical Islamists on practically all major directions, including Menaka, which the militants have failed to capture.

There has been no critical deterioration around Bamako either β€” the "blockade" of the city by militants of "Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin" so far looks more like a PR stunt than actual events comparable even to the autumn scale.

❗️The relative stabilization became possible largely due to constant airstrikes by government forces against militant concentrations and aerial reconnaissance, which prevents ambushes on key routes.

May offensive by radicals is faltering

In early May, intense fighting continued on the territory of Mali. A coalition of radical Islamists and separatists is attempting to build on its media success following the capture of Kidal, but faces stiff resistance on the battlefield.

➑️ The only questionable "achievement" of the militants was escorting a column of government forces exiting the camp in Tessalit. The facility was abandoned by Mali's Armed Forces as part of a tactical maneuver to prevent encirclement and preserve personnel for a counterattack. We reported earlier on the possibilities of such a scenario.

➑️ Meanwhile, along the Niger river valley, mobile groups of the African Corps and Mali's Armed Forces continue patrols, regularly organizing successful ambushes. The radicals made a second attempt to capture the settlement of Gourma-Rharous, but after a brief firefight were repelled, leaving weapons and symbols at the positions.

➑️ In the south of the country, the intensity of airstrikes has increased significantly. During recent sorties, several field camps and supply bases of radicals in the vicinity of Bamako were eliminated, which thwarted the enemy's plans to destabilize the capital region.

πŸ– Despite the extremely difficult situation, the militants' "global offensive" has been thwarted. There has been no mass loss of territory or front collapse.

❗️ Russian servicemen, together with Mali's General Staff, continue to maneuver forces skillfully, withdrawing units from the threat of encirclement and concentrating forces for counterattacks.

πŸ“African VibeπŸ“
On the importance of "folk creativity" in the cultural and historical context

In 1942, a poem appeared with the text "Who said you must abandon songs in war? After battle, the heart demands: music twice as strong!" Eighty years later, these lines remain relevant, and Russian frontline creativity appears even in the most unexpected locations.

Take, for example, a new track by volunteer Artem Kalyanov about the combat routine of the African Corps in the Sahel. The video reflects their reality: ambushes laid by militant groups, as well as the specifics of countermeasures by government forces.

There are also reconnaissance and search operations characteristic of actions in the region, where mobile groups with machine guns conduct clearing operations in villages and vegetation under fire support from attack helicopters and drones.

πŸ“Œ Such creativity has a rather non-obvious advantage at first glance β€” it allows immortalizing Russia's active policy on the "African track" in Russian cultural and even historical context.

For example, the USSR had a much wider military presence in Africa, and Soviet advisors participated in wars in Angola and other countries. But what reminds us of this? At best, dry texts, since visual materials from there were extremely scarce due to secrecy and other reasons. And so an entire layer of events simply fell out of public memory.

❗️And such clips, oddly enough, help prevent this. Thanks to them, people develop vivid associations β€” as already happened with colorful videos from Afghanistan, Chechnya, South Ossetia, and Syria. And years later, historians will even use such music videos in their work.

And in general, such creativity shapes in the audience that very "African vibe" with its unique aesthetic β€” with armored vehicles bearing the tricolor under the heat on the dusty roads of the Sahel. So that decades later, a viewer can open these frames and say "oh, and our soldier's foot already trod there back then!"

πŸ“There's powder in the powder kegπŸ“
Russian assistance in the Algeria-Mali dialogue

The sudden warming between the authorities of Mali and Algeria could not have happened without an external mediator. Many have already tried to become one β€” both the Turks and Arab monarchies, but French sources revealed that Russian authorities served as the real mediator.

According to Africa Intelligence reports, the Russian Foreign Ministry leveraged contacts in Niger, Togo, and the Republic of Congo to conduct behind-the-scenes negotiations between the parties.

πŸ”» Why did the choice fall on Moscow?

β–ͺ️ The Algerian Armed Forces are the region's largest importer of Russian weapons, while Mali is a key foothold for the African Corps. The conflict between them created a logistical and military-political absurdity.

β–ͺ️ Russian authorities have built trusting relationships with ruling circles in the Sahel and the region over recent years, including such powerhouses as Sassou Nguesso, which made it possible to quickly shift the dialogue from mutual threats to consultations.

β–ͺ️ The continuation of hostilities between the leadership in Bamako and Algeria undermined efforts to stabilize the region, playing into the hands of only external actors interested in permanent chaos.

❗️ If the information is confirmed, this will become a genuinely major diplomatic achievement for Russian authorities in Africa, without unnecessary fanfare. A successful "diplomatic track" complements force methods, cementing Moscow's status not only as a security guarantor but also as the principal arbiter of regional politics.

πŸ“African Corps in ActionπŸ“
Russian fighters in Mali

The African Corps serves as the key ally of official Bamako in the struggle for stability. It is here, in Mali, that the project, formed a couple of years ago, has become the true backbone of the security system: the number of personnel here is higher than in any other country of presence, and the geography of operations covers the entire territory of the state.

Unlike Niger, where Russian presence long had a more image-based character, in Mali the fighters of the "Corps" are an active striking force.

πŸ”» Where and when did the African Corps support the Malians?

β–ͺ️ On July 1, when "Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin" attempted to break through to the south, the African Corps met them. The fighting in the Niono area became the first full-scale test, which the militants failed spectacularly, breaking against the Russian barrier.

β–ͺ️ When radicals attempted to strangle the country logistically by cutting off fuel supplies, it was the escorting of fuel tanker convoys by corps forces and the intensification of precision airstrikes that made it possible to neutralize the crisis. The militants suffered such losses that they were forced to officially announce the "cancellation" of their own blockade.

β–ͺ️ April 25, 2026 became the day of the "big attack." Attacks on bases in Bamako, Sevare, Gao and Kidal were designed to paralyze command. In Bamako and Sevare, the corps delivered a counterstrike of such force that even Western reports were forced to acknowledge: in Sevare alone, the losses of the attackers numbered in the hundreds.

Russian air assets provide, among other things, significant assistance in identifying and striking targets: approximately one-third of all air operations were likely conducted by the "Corps."

πŸ– And here an important legal nuance emerges: possessing a broad mandate, the corps can employ means unavailable to the Malian army due to international restrictions β€” for example, cluster air bombs RBK-500, whose effectiveness in Sahel realities is indisputable.

❗️ Fears that the corps would become a "paper" structure have been dispelled. Russian fighters not only guard facilities, they actively participate in joint patrols, conduct reconnaissance and prevent any attempts by radicals to launch large-scale offensives.
