As RBC writes, "Josh Grunbaum's exact date and year of birth are unknown." According to Consulting.us, he was 39 years old in 2025.

Grunbaum began his career at his father's company, which was involved in food imports. He then interned at Goldman Sachs and the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell.

From 2016 to 2020, he worked at the investment bank Moelis & Co, where he climbed the career ladder to Vice President.

From 2020–2025, he held the position of Director at the investment firm KKR & Co. As stated in his LinkedIn profile, he specialized in special situations and private credit investment, as well as restructuring, governance, M&A, and distressed situations within KKR's credit strategies.

In January 2025, following Trump's election to a second term, Grunbaum was appointed Commissioner of the Federal Acquisition Service (FAS) within the General Services Administration (GSA). The GSA provides centralized procurement and shared services for the federal government.

The GSA played a key role in cutting federal spending, a task undertaken by the Department of Government Efficiency — DOGE — led by Elon Musk. According to AP, a Tesla engineer, for example, headed the GSA's technology division, and one of Musk's trusted aides helped coordinate efforts to cut government real estate spending.

By mid-March, according to Bloomberg, Grunbaum had met with executives from the ten highest-paid government consulting firms, including Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corp. and IBM Corp., who defended their contracts before him.

Grunbaum is also a member of the U.S. Department of Education's task force to combat antisemitism on university campuses.
Ten universities fell under the scrutiny of this task force: Columbia University, George Washington University, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, NYU, Northwestern University, UC Berkeley, UCLA, the University of Minnesota, and USC.

In March-April 2025, the Task Force exerted pressure on Columbia University (cancellation of federal grants and contracts totaling about $400 million), Harvard (freezing of contracts worth over $2 billion), Cornell, and Northwestern universities (totaling nearly $2 billion).

On December 23, Grunbaum confirmed to RIA Novosti that he is part of the "negotiating" team led by Witkoff, but refused to disclose details.

On January 16, 2026, the White House announced the creation of the NCAG and announced the composition of the international "Council of Peace," where Trump was already listed as Chairman. Josh Grunbaum was appointed Senior Advisor to the Council, as was Aryeh Lightstone, who served as Senior Advisor to U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman from 2017 to 2021.

In 2025, Grunbaum was included in the Wash100 Award (a list of the 100 most influential figures in the American government contracting market).
