Deck lifting equipment such as gantry cranes, general cargo crane, provision crane, derrick etc. help in carrying heavy loads/cargo on board ships. As these deck machinery systems are subjected to continuous loading, their parts wear down at a faster rate, thus requiring maintenance at regular intervals of time. Inability to do so can lead to system failure, unfortunate accidents, and loss of lives and property.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a new mandatory regulation for onboard lifting appliances: SOLAS Regulation II-1/3-13. The aim is to provide a uniform level of safety for their design, construction and installation, as well as to stipulate consistent requirements for periodical examinations, load tests, maintenance, inspections and operation.
This new regulation will enter into force on 1 January 2026. #Solas #Lifting #Appliance

Are Your Fire-Fighting Foams PFOS Free? Compliance Ready for 2026.Gard reports that from 1 January 2026, the use or storage of fire-extinguishing media containing Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) will be prohibited under the Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the High-Speed Craft (HSC) Codes — a significant development for maritime safety, environmental compliance and shipboard risk management.
PFOS, a persistent organic pollutant (POP) from the broader class of Per‑ and poly‑fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), was once widely used in aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) for extinguishing class B fires (flammable liquids) due to its excellent oil- and water repellency. However, its same chemical stability means it does not break down easily in the environment, accumulates in living organisms and carries health risks such as liver damage, cardiovascular disease and infertility. #Gard #Solas #PFOSfree #FireFightingFoam

24/2025 Upcoming Amendments to IAMSAR Manual. Under SOLAS regulation V/21, all ships are required to carry an up-to-date copy of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) Manual Volume III. As stated in MSC-MEPC.2/Circ.2, the IAMSAR Manual Volume III must always be available in hard copy, as it is required for use during emergencies. Maritime compliance: New IACS Standards for Fire Detection and Extinguishing, The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) continues to play a pivotal role in harmonizing the interpretation of international maritime regulations. By issuing Unified Interpretations (UIs), IACS ensures that the broad language used in the IMO’s SOLAS conventions is applied consistently by all member societies and flag states, eliminating "gray areas" that could lead to safety lapses or compliance confusion during ship construction and inspection.
The recent revisions to UI SC73 and UI SC160 represent a refined approach to fire protection, distinguishing between open-air environments and enclosed high-risk service areas. #Solas #IACS #FireSafety #Update

🚢 IMO MSC
более высокая скорость и объём передачи данных;

Royal Institute of Navigation (RIN) The Impacts of GNSS Interference on Maritime Safety,
GNSS interference.
