🎼19 May 1945. Happy Birthday πŸ₯³πŸΎ to Mr. Pete Townshend, born Peter Dennis Blandford Townshend in Chiswick, England.
A self-taught guitarist 🎸 he has been for a lifetime the founder, songwriter and co-leader of The Who, a rock band still active since 1964 😳 which maybe was not as big as the Beatles and the Stones in terms of fame and success, but for sure of the same (if not higher) importance for the history and development of the entire rock scene ! 🀟πŸ’ͺ
#PeteTownshend has written dozens of legendary rock songs plus rock operas and concept albums that still today are regarded as milestonesπŸ”... and his stage performances were legendary tooπŸ”₯, perhaps noone better than him has embodied that generation of rock rebels 😈

🎼14 August 1971. Exactly 50 years ago The Who release their 5th studio album Who's Next, widely considered their absolute masterpiece!
For sure one of the best rock albums ever: Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, Keith Moon at their peak!
In Who's Next also appear the most in demand guest musicians of the time such as Al Kooper, Nicky Hopkins, Leslie West.
Here's the legendary intro songπŸ‘‡πŸ€ŸπŸŽΈ The song title refers to two of Townshend's major inspirations at the time: Indian spiritual master Meher Baba and American minimalist composer Terry Riley.

🎼15 January 1965. A young rock band from London, UK release their second 45 (or 7 inch) single, the first under the new name they chose for the group: The Who!
I Can't Explain was written by #guitarist and main songwriter Pete Townsend when he was 18, who candidly admits in the liner notes the resemblance of this song with another contemporaneous rock hit 😳: All Day and All of the Night by the #Kinks.

During the rehearsals of I Can't Explain a young #JimmyPage took part as sessionman 🎸 though not credited on the final recording: both #TheWho and Page recalled this years later.
I Can't Explain would become a The Who classic and a rock standard, covered by many artists and bands, some more in the Chat RoomπŸ‘‡

"Sometimes I wonder what I'm a-gonna do
'Cause there ain't no cure for the summertime blues."
#EddieCochran

One of the most influential early Rockabilly singers - songwriters. His most famous hits "Twenty Flight Rock", "Summertime Blues", "C'mon Everybody" and "Somethin' Else" became favorite standards for so many future rock and punk bands, from #TheWho to #SexPistols, from #BlueCheer to #StrayCats.

Gone too soon at 21 πŸ˜” in a car accident when in England on tour with his friend and fellow rockabilly hero #GeneVincent.

πŸ“€ Quadrophenia
#Rock #HardRock #ProgressiveRock #RockOpera

50 years ago The Who from London, #UK released their 6th studio album.

Issued as a double album, Quadrophenia is a Concept Rock Opera entirely written by Pete Townshend: set in London and Brighton in 1965, it tells the story of a young "mod" named Jimmy and his search for self-worth and importance.

A film version of Quadrophenia directed by Franc Roddam came out in 1979: it was a commercial and critical success, crucial for the Mod Revival movement of the late 1970s / early 1980s.
